Description

What is ciprofloxacin?

Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic in a group of drugs called fluoroquinolones (flor-o-KWIN-o-lones). Ciprofloxacin fights bacteria in the body.

Ciprofloxacin is used to treat different types of bacterial infections. It is also used to treat people who have been exposed to anthrax.

Important information

You should not use this medication if you are also taking tizanidine.

You may not be able to use ciprofloxacin if you have a muscle disorder. Tell your doctor if you have a history of myasthenia gravis.

Ciprofloxacin may cause swelling or tearing of a tendon (the fiber that connects bones to muscles in the body), especially in the Achilles’ tendon of the heel. This effect may be more likely to occur if you are over 60, if you take steroid medication, or if you have had a kidney, heart, or lung transplant.

Stop taking this medicine and call your doctor at once if you have sudden pain, swelling, bruising, tenderness, stiffness, or movement problems in any of your joints. Rest the joint until you receive medical care or instructions.

Before taking this medicine

You should not use this medication if you are allergic to ciprofloxacin, or if:

  • you are also taking tizanidine; or
  • you are allergic to other fluoroquinolones (gemifloxacin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, ofloxacin, norfloxacin, and others).

You may not be able to use ciprofloxacin if you have a muscle disorder. Tell your doctor if you have a history of myasthenia gravis.

To make sure ciprofloxacin is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:

  • a heart rhythm disorder, especially if you take medication to treat it;
  • a personal or family history of Long QT syndrome;
  • tendon problems, arthritis or other joint problems (especially in children);
  • a muscle or nerve disorder;
  • trouble swallowing pills;
  • liver disease;
  • kidney disease (or if you are on dialysis);
  • seizures or epilepsy;
  • a history of head injury or brain tumor;
  • diabetes (especially if you take oral diabetes medication);
  • low levels of potassium in your blood (hypokalemia);
  • if you use a blood thinner (warfarin, Coumadin) and have “INR” or prothrombin time tests.

Ciprofloxacin may cause swelling or tearing of a tendon (the fiber that connects bones to muscles in the body), especially in the Achilles’ tendon of the heel. This can happen during treatment or up to several months after you stop taking ciprofloxacin. Tendon problems may be more likely to occur if you are over 60, if you take steroid medication, or if you have had a kidney, heart, or lung transplant.

FDA pregnancy category C. It is not known whether ciprofloxacin will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using this medication.

Ciprofloxacin can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while using this medicine.

Cifran

Cifran is a medication that is used in treating certain types of bacterial infections such as infections of the prostate, kidney, bladder, skin, lungs, bowel, bones and joints. The active ingredient that is in this medication is called ciprofloxacin and is listed in a group of antibiotics known as quinolones. Cifran works by destroying the bacteria that causes the infections in your body. This will not work against viral infections like colds or the flu.  While there is no indication that this medication is addictive in nature at all, it is recommended that children and teenagers not take this medication.

There are some instances in which it is recommended that you not take Cifran. These include if you have any allergies to the main ingredient in Cifran, ciprofloxacin along with additional quinolone antibiotics like nalidixic acid, moxifloxacin or norfloxacin. You will know if you have an allergic reaction to any of these medications because you will experience symptoms such as wheezing, itchiness, hives, shortness of breath, breathing difficulties and swelling of face, lips and tongue.

Cifran should be avoided if you also taking a muscle relaxant medication called tizanidine. Cifran has been known to interact with tizanidine, which may cause unwanted side effects including drowsiness and low blood pressure levels.

Your doctor needs to be aware of certain things before you start taking Cifran. This includes any prescription, over-the-counter medications, vitamins and supplements you are taking, allergies to any medications including aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications and dyes, preservatives and foods.

You will need to let your doctor know if you are pregnant or your plan to become to become pregnant any time soon. This medication is usually not recommended for women who are pregnant but your doctor will assess what the risks and the benefits are. Cifran is also passed through breast milk so it’s important that your doctor be aware if you are breastfeeding.

Your doctor also needs to be aware of any medical conditions you have especially kidney disease, stroke, brain conditions, seizures, arrhythmias, liver disease, tendon disorders or myasthenia gravis.

There are some medications that will interact with Cifran. These medications include arrhythmia medications, theophylline, an asthma medication; probenecid, a gout medication; medications used to prevent blood clots, cyclosporine, a medication to help with the body’s immune system; glibenclamide, a medication for diabetes control; caffeine, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, methotrexate, a medication used for some kinds of cancers, rheumatoid arthritis or psoriasis; duloxetine, medication used depression; clozapine, a medication used to control schizophrenia; sildenafil, an erectile dysfunction medication and ropinirole, medication used for restless leg syndrome and Parkinson’s disease.
